For about the last year I have been using trade-me quite a bit. It is a New Zealand Ebay equivalent I guess you could say. Last week I got two items I am pretty stoked about. Item one is a Monsterpocolypse starter kit a strategic war game with giant monsters. Whats not to love?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN4_P0IlRBnE5ovX16Q3yYb4PUMLnZNYAe3SLB2b-ilk8AibTdSaGA-397twPafCUaNBUG7KbruDMnqamI5qaZ2iWzIxcxr9-VvMQUVGNsM8GZKcHhsCtDsHFlMXOBwRla2CJ4g4-ebGY3/s1600/Monsterpocalypse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN4_P0IlRBnE5ovX16Q3yYb4PUMLnZNYAe3SLB2b-ilk8AibTdSaGA-397twPafCUaNBUG7KbruDMnqamI5qaZ2iWzIxcxr9-VvMQUVGNsM8GZKcHhsCtDsHFlMXOBwRla2CJ4g4-ebGY3/s1600/Monsterpocalypse.jpg" height="268" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In all honesty I don't really know how to play but it is highly rated and comes with heaps of cool monsters and buildings and a map for only $30. I am picking it up at Call To Arms tournament in a weeks time. The second item is the Tantive IV which is a giant x wing spaceship. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<br />
I thought I would give some tips which hopefully apply to wider than just trade me.<br />
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Always ask for a better price. If you don't ask you will never know, and if they say no, no skin of your back! </li>
<li>Create watch lists. On trade me I have set searches for games I am interested in however don't feel any pressing need to get straight away. </li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span id="goog_1947928856"></span><span id="goog_1947928857"></span><br /></div>
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjny_Q-iv0lpX2xbKlNDeoZ7HKIC0jmo9L7z93ZUoz6XWchXVhzHNWiveVy9au415-PEKo6TXUj54DbXb0liP4PG-5mymjT1Vi3pP1ui2Bhzmko81Ftypt8OxyYOmynHo64Eg6U0rToHQU/s1600/Screenshot_2014-08-10-12-45-57.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjny_Q-iv0lpX2xbKlNDeoZ7HKIC0jmo9L7z93ZUoz6XWchXVhzHNWiveVy9au415-PEKo6TXUj54DbXb0liP4PG-5mymjT1Vi3pP1ui2Bhzmko81Ftypt8OxyYOmynHo64Eg6U0rToHQU/s1600/Screenshot_2014-08-10-12-45-57.png" height="400" width="225" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here is a screenshot from my favourites, <br />I get an email if anything comes up every 3 days. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
3. Don't get it if you feel the price is to high, something else will alway come up. If the seller can't sell often they will re-list it with a lower price, I have got items this way a few times including the tantive IV.<br />
<br />
I am sure there are other tips which are not on the top of my mind currently but you get the picture. Always ask questions, be patient, keep an eye out! If you have any other ideas put it down below. I guess I should share my major success story. Twilight imperium which is normally $150-$200 I scored for $29, bargain huh! I waited about 2 years before this bargain came up however I didn't care so much as its such a long game (looking at 8 hours) I knew it wouldn't get much table time. </div>

<a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/2014/07/hello-world-and-diy-x-wing-space-table.html">Last week</a> I made headway on a space board to use for X-Wing. However to make it playable I had to mark out a 3 by 3 square. As it was already three foot wide I just had to divide up the length.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am happy with the final result. I preferred the table as solid space however the line had to be made for a game of X-Wing. Of interest, while cutting the wood originally I didn't think about size, so if you were to play two games of X-Wing at once, there would be one 3 foot side and the other about 1/2 a cm off. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The table even looks good for an epic board game. My green felt however does provide an easier surface to use, namely when picking up tokens and cards. Here Dan, Alex and I are playing a game of Arkham Horror. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was nice playing Arkham Horror as it is truly a classic. The mechanic is very clunky although it is impressive that it manages to hold such a complex co-operative game and keep it fun. We didn't quite finish however I am pretty sure Shuddle M'ell would have consumed us and inevitably the whole world. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

A new post so soon? It was kind of an emergency as this morning Fantasy Flight released info on the new B-wing spaceship in the rebel aces expansion pack. I guess I am pretty excited as I genuinely think the B-wing is one of the best spaceships in Star Wars X-wing at the moment.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/SWX29-b-wing.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/SWX29-b-wing.png" height="267" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The new B wing with the new paint scheme. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />Pretty good looking ship huh. Fact is I don't care much for how it looks, at first I thought it was an ugly ship and who would buy that however it has grown on me. However more importantly what does it add to the X-Wing game. First up the new pilots:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/keyan-farlander.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/keyan-farlander.png" height="400" width="286" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/nera-dantels.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/nera-dantels.png" height="400" width="286" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Both these pilots have pretty sweet abilities, Keyan being able to negate the negatives of stress which is especially potent with the new technology to stress enemy ships. Nera Dantels (cool last name) who effectively has a torpedo turret! I think with the release of the Tie Phantom who is criminally manoeuvrable lots of fans cried foul saying it is an unbeatable ship so FFG decided to add some more turret ships into the mix to negate this and here we have another and on my favourite ship!<br />
<br />
Now another exciting addition is:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/bwing-e2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/news/rebel-aces/bwing-e2.png" height="400" width="258" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now you can add crew to your B-Wing. Nice. Consider this for a admittedly point expensive ship</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nera Dantels with</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
B-Wing/E2<br />Recon specialist (gain 2 focus)<br />Dead eye<br />Advanced proton torpedoes<br />Ftorpedoes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
at 39 points it is a tad silly however now you can take a focus action and get the focus you need to spend on firing the missiles with dead eye and then a focus to convert eyes to hits, with Advanced proton torpedoes this is insane as you covert up to 3 blanks to focus out of your 5 attack device. That is a huge alpha strike! Probably a better way to use Nera is</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nera with</div>
<div>
2x F torpedoes</div>
<div>
munitions failsafe</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
at 31 points still expensive but not so bad. The Ftorps are a 3 attack torpedoes which always stresses the target you shoot at. Being a turret it leaves the phantom little places to go and stress really hurts it. The munitions failsafe stops you from having to discard you torpedoes if it misses which with the Ftorps is nice as it stresses the ship either way. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Needless to say I can't wait for this expansion and some more B-Wing shenanigans. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>

Well it has been a while! I finally decided it is time to get back into the blogging world again! First off I better give a shout out to Paul from <a href="http://reddogofwar.blogspot.co.nz/2014/05/private-liebster-reporting-for-duty.html?showComment=1406264256473#c4370582229659534168">Dog of War</a> for nominating us for a Liebster award which I will have to work out how to put on our website. I think that means we will have to nominate some lucky bloggers out there.<br />
<br />
What have Dan and I been doing lately? Well after our last post we played a fair amount of FOW honing our skills. Unfortunately I am a terrible procrastinator when it comes to painting so that took a lull. Dan has been working on some large scale model planes. After FOW we played a fair amount of Star Wars X-Wing. I even attended a FLGS tournament and came 4th out of 13 which I was pretty stoked about!<br />

Not so bad. Pretty much just used black spray paint for the base layer (I had to use 2 cans) and blue to create the nebula/stars. As you can see its outside drying right at this moment. Next step is to paint a white stripe down the centre to split the table into two as its 6 by 3 where a standard x wing game is 3 by 3. Conveniently enough it can work as two tables side by side or the 6 by 3 size works perfectly for the x wing epic rules.<br />

I have struggled to get motivated to pick up a paint brush, let alone blog about it. Steve has been carrying the blog for some time now. <br />
<br />
I have finally got around to painting up a recon platoon to go with mu Fallschirmjager army. Mobile recon is helpful with the FJ because they are a pretty static bunch. A lot of lists for them have infantry scout platoons for recon, which I did not like the look of. The Ersatz FJ in Bridge by Bridge have the option of a halftrack platoon, with a sdkfz 250/1 as command and 250/9s in support.<br />
<br />
Battlefront were out of the 250/9s, so I sourced these guys from Forged in Battle. They have the built in base which I am not a fan of generally, but the quality of the casting was quite good and there was a lot of detail on the halftracks. Here are the pictures:<br />

Thats right folks, Dungeons and Dragons are making a game utilising the FlighPath game system seen in such games as <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/Star%20Wars%20X-wing%20miniatures%20game">Star Wars X-Wing</a> which I have blogged about now and then. The game will be called <a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/155689/attack-wing-dungeons-dragons-starter-set">Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
But there are no spaceships in D&D right? Well apparently players will control dragons which they will fly around the table. As far as I am aware like Star Wars X-Wing and Star Trek Fleet Captains they are releasing a starter set with 3 dragons. However unlike Star Wars and Star Trek D&D is planning on introducing ground units like giants and wizards.<br />
<br />
Dogfighting dragons huh? I think it sounds like it would be a fun game and adding ground units will make it a more diverse game. However my gripe would be that in the space dogfights the manoeuvre dials which are used to fly can be quite clinical with either basic turns, banks or moving straight forward, this works well for spaceships, I would imagine Dragons to be able to move in a more versatile manor. Who knows what will happen anyhow, I look forward to see what they come up with. Admittedly I probably won't get this game due to already investing in Star Wars X-Wing. </div>

Another games club, another Flames of War game. This time I am using the 3rd US armoured division which are confident trained rather than confident veterans. I was doing my research and as the Americans have a lot of firepower they work best as trained. I guess the rational for this is to hit scores are based on your opponents skill rating so it really doesn't mater what your skill rating is. Trained armies win in shoot outs and veterans in assaults. Anyhow here is some photos of the first part of my 3rd US armoured division versus Dans fallschirmjäger army at 1300 points. The scenario is free for all. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next turn involved me advancing my shermans shooting some covering smoke, while I was at it destroyed his Pak 40 platoon and foolishly assaulted one of dans fallshirmjager platoons. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dan's platoon was still pined from last turn but all his troops had panzefausts and were at 100% strength. No amount of covering smoke could prepare me. He missed all his shots from the teams in the smoke but the three out managed to all hit. One 76mm sherman was destroyed and one bailed. Then in Dans turn he finished them off. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My armoured rifle platoon did managed to destroy 2/3 of Dans armoured recon teams on the other side of the field however. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In Dans turn he advanced and took out half my armoured mortar platoon with the rest of his panzerfaust teams. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpSTs8PXyv_sDRgS6O7kidTkzRcnNJoPtPMLzovCgYxz6vJXVfICIStQj9BSM33vZb4BtS6hLUJv4WMitXBflFHtwoATG6Vsh8Tcye_u3m4mn4PWs94EgMm1Ak4DrO1GwjCbhRpwD7RDM/s1600/20140305_224357.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpSTs8PXyv_sDRgS6O7kidTkzRcnNJoPtPMLzovCgYxz6vJXVfICIStQj9BSM33vZb4BtS6hLUJv4WMitXBflFHtwoATG6Vsh8Tcye_u3m4mn4PWs94EgMm1Ak4DrO1GwjCbhRpwD7RDM/s1600/20140305_224357.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we called it a night. We are planning to finish this game in a fortnights time. I feel though we destroyed a platoon each I feel Dan is at an advantage as my platoons were more costly and he is in a good position. I guess I jumped the gun with my assault where I should of sat back moving and shooting which Americans are good at. Also I forgot to use my recon to lift gone to ground, doh'. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For a second run with the US armoured devision I feel I did well and learn some hard mistakes I shan't make again in a hurry, namely destroying my 76mm shermans by assaulting a fully armed platoon. I am looking forward to revising the force and trying again. Plus despite everything we had a great time!</div>

You may recall about a week ago a post about stripping my Flames of War Thunderbolt because I was unhappy with the paint job (you can read the post <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/2014/02/stripping-thunderbolt.html">here</a>). Well now I have finished my second attempt at painting her up. Throughout the paint job I felt unhappy with it as I found the model quite hard to paint. Perhaps it was because there isn't much definition making it hard to paint from dark to light or do an effective wash. I later found out that there are useful ways to do washes for such models like using a pin. However after a paint job which took to long I decided finally to call it complete. After a day the paint job grew on me but I would still say its a pretty shoddy paint job. However warts and all here it is:<div>

After all it still will blow up german steel no matter how bad it looks doing it, right? </div>

I'm feeling pretty chuffed. After years of playing games on the kitchen table I now have a dedicated gaming table. We decided a month or two back to get a bed for the spare room which is a king single however a trundler fits perfectly underneath. The trundler not only makes two beds for guests but also raises up to the perfect hight to make the bed into a superior king sized beds for couples. We now have a new flatmate however who had a bed so we set the guest bed up in the second lounge for guests. That was when the idea came to me, if we put the spare mattress under our bed we can put a piece of ply and felt on the guest trundler to pull out for games. One of the great things about the idea is now being able to leave games set up hidden away under the bed. Fortunately my flatmate Zac is a builder so cut the ply into shape and came away with a result.<br />
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4xas9O770UD4bu_aADsATfj5hd6RyGLnQs-4VDupsOxkrj8tuo-HCikGPbYtUwvxVTDnhaxsG1kuBMfTpXkqNxgXqKt6RiZe0S2ymr9dtYISKwyVm0Fsdp5-3r0OKfisjrabFUqbK-kI/s1600/20140302_184542.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4xas9O770UD4bu_aADsATfj5hd6RyGLnQs-4VDupsOxkrj8tuo-HCikGPbYtUwvxVTDnhaxsG1kuBMfTpXkqNxgXqKt6RiZe0S2ymr9dtYISKwyVm0Fsdp5-3r0OKfisjrabFUqbK-kI/s1600/20140302_184542.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">We initiated the table with a game of 2 player Eclipse. We both played combat focused race. </span><span style="text-align: center;">I played Rho Indri Syndicate (effectively space prates) and Zac the Orion. </span><span style="text-align: center;">Zac lost and I won my 3rd 2 player game in a row, score. In the photo you can see Zac recounting his points to confirm his defeat. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilv9ncv747e6TECiKHSPtUl4jKbPLbpX0okyeCVBFzpNs-fbc3NVEzRYp4llJKEL9FDfKvMWmtWNbXSL3VcQtzIekXHtTPAsSjb17W-CS9yrFsq_gP5-nxAWHqoq8G31Ghgh9jYuQyKaM/s1600/20140302_184555.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilv9ncv747e6TECiKHSPtUl4jKbPLbpX0okyeCVBFzpNs-fbc3NVEzRYp4llJKEL9FDfKvMWmtWNbXSL3VcQtzIekXHtTPAsSjb17W-CS9yrFsq_gP5-nxAWHqoq8G31Ghgh9jYuQyKaM/s1600/20140302_184555.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the background you can see some of my board game collection. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As you can see I still need to get the felt but it is on order. In the end I am pretty stoked about all of this. It is nice to have a dedicated gaming space even if it has to be hidden away, just one step closer to a gaming room... I guess my only complaint is due to the table being a single bed its long and narrow so a odd size but it works. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now all I have to do is make some terrain for wargaming. I have some wood to make hedgerows following a method that I got off Big Lees Miniature Adventures <a href="http://www.blmablog.com/2010/05/making-15mm-bocage.html">here</a> and trees from Scotts Wargaming <a href="http://scottswargaming.blogspot.co.nz/2013/07/cant-see-wood-for-trees.html">here</a>. Who knows I may even make some buildings with the left over MDF. </div>

Work commitments (otherwise known as four days of fishing in Golden Bay) have got in the way of this being posted, so my apologies for it being a little dated. But last Wednesday Steve was able to put together a 1300 point American Armoured Company known as "Hell on Wheels".<br />
<br />
We played "surrounded" with my Fallschirmjargers holding the middle of the table. I was using a Bridge by Bridge list of Ersatz FJ, with Panthers in support and those rather handy panzerfaust teams that Colonel Von der Heydte comes with. Here's some pictures:<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After some initial gains, the American armour was dealt a heavy blow from the panzerfaust teams in the woods. We muddled through the rules a little on them, but they hit a hard blow against the Shermans. The Panthers took care of another platoon on the far side and Steve soon called it a day. He had taken out two of the pak 40s and a number of infantry teams, but was on the brink of having most of his platoons destroyed.<br />
<br />
It was all played in a good spirit and Steve was a good sport despite my panzerfaust guys being a little too strong it seemed... He has plans for next time, which include a better terrain arrangement. On that note, the eagle eyed of you will see that there are the new Battlefront buildings there - the corner store, the large house and the Bastogne Church. All looking good on the table top. The paint job on the church is a bit average but the others are all very good.<br />

That was as raunchy I could make that title sound. As you probably guessed this post is about paint stripping my battlefront P-47 thunderbolt. After multiple attempts of trying to paint the panels white unsuccessfully I finally made the decision to strip the paint and start again. When I made that decision, instead of feeling like I wasted hours it felt good knowing that I had accepted defeat and could start afresh. Unfortunately I did not take photos of my failed paint job so you will just get some pictures of the stripped model.<br />
<br />
The first choice I had to make was what to strip it with. I read some pretty mixed thoughts about using nail polish. One forum had some guy saying...<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>Whens the best time to use nail polish to remove paint? Never! </i></blockquote>
So what do I do? Tempt fate and use nail polish on my ?resin P-47 Thunderbolt because I couldn't be bothered getting anything else. Here is the chemical ingredients full of nasty things that may ruin my model. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDfXMx_86KM4F9XclrLTJbwVgYtHoTVR2H6i_vF8L7CAKFqcqTq8pfh9LVllJVavdLfGR9hi_ddTF4E2O7iG4wlkzJR1ke7J8UfPCOCEF2-xs-OkibZiky23n6QHvVrvV1GskR1rBksK4/s1600/20140223_121907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDfXMx_86KM4F9XclrLTJbwVgYtHoTVR2H6i_vF8L7CAKFqcqTq8pfh9LVllJVavdLfGR9hi_ddTF4E2O7iG4wlkzJR1ke7J8UfPCOCEF2-xs-OkibZiky23n6QHvVrvV1GskR1rBksK4/s1600/20140223_121907.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I believe I read some advice that dipping for short 5 second period then scrubbing with a toothbrush did the trick. So that is what I did. About 10 minuets later this is what I got: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Not bad. I didn't get some of the paint off, not sure why but it just wouldn't budge. I believe there is some definition missing but nothing noticeable. I guess I would recommend for those who are planning on doing this. Dip the model in nail polish for about 5 seconds, then scrub some paint off the repeat till its all shinny. </div>

In preparation for my Hell on Wheels companies first outing this Wednesday I have whipped up a couple of objective markers. I had a spark of creativity, 'I know lets use newspaper to make it look like top secret information'. So I stuck some cardboard together, used a bit of sand and painted the Hells on Wheels patch to get this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNO6KI38xQtKhiX39XjnqKTuaxo3sBJiC1bcCJ7jEq58cZKtNJJbX7ismGZVd6ElzvroZ_JyyURPkJelItRedrpPcvSCcFOqiUOiIMF6HiAa6BomK3-tL1nJNxIK8mfpOo5OH2Jd4diNs/s1600/20140218_165457.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNO6KI38xQtKhiX39XjnqKTuaxo3sBJiC1bcCJ7jEq58cZKtNJJbX7ismGZVd6ElzvroZ_JyyURPkJelItRedrpPcvSCcFOqiUOiIMF6HiAa6BomK3-tL1nJNxIK8mfpOo5OH2Jd4diNs/s1600/20140218_165457.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Well I think in the end it looks alright, but just alright. I guess my main concern is it doesn't really fit the theme of the game, unless the ol' man likes his morning news paper. I can't say I knew what I was expecting yet this will do the trick until I make or get some new ones. A advantage of these is I prefer flat objective markers as it stops the confusion of the markers not being terrain pieces. </div>

Finally after much procrastination I have finished my American armoured rifle platoon. A few weeks back I completed <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/2014/01/armoured-rifle-platoon-infantry-finally.html">the infantry</a> and now I have completed their rides! Without more to do here are the pictures.<br />

There are a few more infantry models I need to paint up and glue into place however these are good enough for now. I am taking these suckers out for their first spin on Wednesday with Dan. I can't wait to see how they get along, it will likely end it bullets and explosions.</div>

More recently I have been trying to add board games to my collection which are more accessible to a wider audience. I have finally come to the conclusion that not all wish to sit down for a 3 hour game of <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/Eclipse">Eclipse</a> or Agricola. After reading a post on <a href="https://wilwheaton.net/">Will Wheaton dot Net</a> I found out that the games I have been trying to add to my collection are called gateway games. On the post he gives a list of the top 10 gateway games as rated by board game geek, here they are:<br />
<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2b2b2b; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">1 <span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Ticket to Ride</span></span>/<span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">TTR Europe</span></span><br />2 <span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Carcassonne</span></span> (all)<br />3 <span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">King of Tokyo</span></span><br />4 <span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Dixit</span></span><br />5 For Sale<br />6 Diamant/Incan Gold<br />7 Can’t Stop<br />8 <span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Pandemic</span></span><br />9 Love Letter<br />10 <span style="color: #24890d;"><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Settlers of Catan</span></span></span></div>
<div>
<i>I copy and pasted directly from his website and the links to the episodes of Will Wheaton's episodes of tabletop came too, hence the links in the list. </i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Will then went on to say this...</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #2b2b2b; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">different games work for different people, and someone who loves Ticket To Ride may not like King of Tokyo at all, so ask your non-gamer or tabletop-curious friends questions, and choose their gateway game carefully. All of these games have a high ratio of luck to strategy, which makes it a lot of fun for experienced and new players alike to play together.</span></span></blockquote>
I feel like that makes a lot of sense, by having a decent diversity of 'gateway games' in your collection ideally there will be a game for everyone. This has an added bonus of playing more games!<br />
<br />
As this has been something on my mind for the past while I have accumulated some more games which are easy enough to pop out and work for most audiences. Some of these games are admittedly not on the list above but still they seem to do the trick and I would consider to be gateway games. Here is a list of my new gateway games<br />
<br />
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Saboteur</li>
<li>Galaxy Trucker (although it doesn't work for the easily frustrated)</li>
<li>Tsuro of the Seas</li>
<li>Bohnanza. </li>
<li><a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/2014/02/coup-and-brief-journey-through-childhood.html">Coup</a> (as seen in a previous post) </li>
<li>Twilight Imperium... I kid. </li>
</ol>
<div>
Anyhow I am planning on doing a post now and then about some of these games, probably quite sporadicly, to give you all some ideas. I will create a label for gateway games to make them easy to navigate for those interested.</div>

When I was a kid I believe I first got into 'serious' board gaming when I was introduced to the classic world domination game <a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/181/risk">Risk</a>. I was especially drawn in as I won my first game. I remember then playing army soldiers with my friends using little risk pieces which eventually led to Warhammer Fantasy. My Warhammer days didn't last to long as a kid. I eventually sold all my troops only to find that many years later I would get back into painting figurines.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrhe7jhCXWJ3Hldo1oF-d59hXNGLKoklcRX5Mx79-v23WyKsDIj12Fb4sGjoLPRqFRRjYHP5uBqFVpwFL7tXVF0FQ3OOhuhg_r8yu1qSeiMIUcX2FZDbjsvpQmHKyb2YqG2L_q8_2pTOc/s1600/20140211_171759.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrhe7jhCXWJ3Hldo1oF-d59hXNGLKoklcRX5Mx79-v23WyKsDIj12Fb4sGjoLPRqFRRjYHP5uBqFVpwFL7tXVF0FQ3OOhuhg_r8yu1qSeiMIUcX2FZDbjsvpQmHKyb2YqG2L_q8_2pTOc/s1600/20140211_171759.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My antiquated version of risk I scored for 3NZD at an op-shop</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Another game I got into when I was young was the bluffing and deduction game Mafia. Mafia is a game where you all a dealt secret identities and some of the players are mafia and are trying to kill everyone else. The aim depending on who's side you are on is to kill of the other side either by publicly hanging the Mafia or killing the innocent citizens in their sleep. I simply loved this game! I recall one time after going for a tramp in the depths of New Zealand in the pouring rain having a raucous time in our little cabin playing mafia. I must admit I still love bluffing and deduction games and that is why my attention was brought to a relatively new game Coup which is getting some very positive mentions.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Playing Mafia in Jerusalem at a very young age, can you read that face?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1639532_md.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1639532_md.png" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Current Coup box art</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Now that we are done with a slightly off hand introduction... Coup is, you guessed it, a bluffing and deduction game for 2-6 players where the aim of the game is to be the last man standing. Each player has two influence which are represented by charter cards, each charter gives the player a special ability on top of the standard actions. There are 3 of each character making a deck of 15. Here is a photo with a description of all the different actions.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1812508_md.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1812508_md.jpg" height="246" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, 'lucida grande', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 14.77199935913086px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</blockquote>
You need to reduce all the other players to zero influence with the above actions thus eliminating them from the game. The real magic is that the cards are face down so you can take actions from charters you don't have in your hand. However players can challenge you, if you were bluffing you loose an influence turning a card face up and if you were truthful you prove it, get dealt a new card and the challenger looses an influence instead. Of course if you loose two influence you are out of the game, making it a short 10-15 minute game.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately this game, unless you want to spend exorbitant amounts is quite difficult to get due to the next print run occurring in April or May. Undeterred I decided to play with a pack of playing cards and some fake money from Arkham Horror knowing that if I like the game I will probably get a copy when it is reprinted. In short it is a very fun game of deception and deduction. Due to the length we played multiple games back to back and had roaring time doing it. It worked well with some of my less gaming buddies so was enjoyable for the whole family.<br />
<br />
I have read a couple of convincing blogs sharing the various strategies you can use in this game leading me to believe that not only is this a great inclusive game but it has some serious strategical depth to it. I wont go into it myself but check out a stella example by the Tao of Gaming <a href="http://taogaming.wordpress.com/2013/02/10/the-gravity-of-coup/">here</a>. Unfortunately despite multiple thorough readings of the strategy he lists I still seem to loose every game. At least I have a blast loosing! I would highly recommend taking this game out for a spin sometime, after all whats 15 minutes of your life?</div>

I have been meaning to do a post about Betrayal at House on the Hill since the blog began all those years ago, err well months is more accurate. Unfortunately it is really a bit cruel because in the unlikely circumstance that this post makes you want to purchase the game, you can't. Betrayal is currently out of print so a copy on amazon is roughly $260, yikes! Fortunately if you wait till the end of the year I believe another print run is being undertaken.<br />

<br />
<b>Please note some of the things said below could be considered spoilers but I don't really think it will ruin your experience of playing the game. Read on at your own discretion. </b><br />
<br />
So what is Betrayal? It is a game for 3-6 player tile laying game where you explore a haunted house, after 30ish minuets of exploring a random haunt begins involving (in most cases) one player betraying the rest of the investigators. There are 50 different scenarios such as one player controlling a raft of zombies or becoming a demon lord. One scenario involved the betrayers body splitting right open and a two headed snake emerging. My all time favourite scenario involved gigantic 747 sized eagles plucking the house from the ground to feed you to their kin, of course there are less parachutes (yes parachutes in a haunted house) than the number of players so you have to fight for them to jump out first.<br />
<br />
This game over the last few weeks has become a bit of a hit with my flatmates and neighbours so it has been given a good run. Here are some photos from a recent game where Ben ended up betraying us, becoming a zombie lord and ripping us apart.<br />

The game board towards the end of the game. The haunt started when Ben summoned the Zombie lord with the Ring of King Solomon. Our goal was to steal the ring which gave us the needed strength to kill the Zombie Lord. (Please note the game actually called them demons but one in our group wasn't so fond of demons (naturally) so we just changed the villeins to zombies).<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The kid died next, who ever thought it was a good idea to take a kid into a haunted mansion, his hobbies are sticks and collecting bugs. Ben finished the game victorious and no doubt took over the world. Oh here is the end flavour text if the bad guy wins</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>The Hellgate is open. You scrub the blood from your eyes with the heel of your palm. Th sickly sweet tang in the air is just like that in your dream. The tangled bodies of your fellow explorers form a throne of flesh for the demon lord. The screaming has only just began. Just as you've always dreamed. </i></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now no doubt I love this game, heck, who doesn't like acting out a good old B-Grade horror. I got it after I acquired and promptly sold the decidedly average Mansions of Madness as a replacement. It certainly doesn't disappoint and 50 different scenarios and the random nature of the house make it a totally different game each time. The game isn't equal however, the scenarios are often weighted in one sides favour but in the end skill and strategy are only a small part of the game, the role playing element prevails making this game a real treat each time it comes of the shelf. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

More than a few months back I began working on my Flames of War American armoured rifle platoon. After a 6 month holiday in Europe, working on some Empire of the Dead bobbies and plenty of procrastination I have finished the infantry. Unfortunately I still have 3 half tracks to go but at least its a big step forward to completing my American Hell on Wheels company. <br />

I quite like this platoon, it is nice have such a large diversity of units in a squad, yet the riflemen with ROF 1 keeps the cost down. It felt like quite a mission painting these guys up as it is a large platoon especially when you include the half tracks, however the most important thing is they will look amazing on the table alongside the rest of the company. </div>

Not but a moment ago I won an auction on trade me (kinda like New Zealand Ebay) for Twilight Imperium 3. The auction was for a 80NZD buy now, however I went for the reserve price of 25NZD to see the auction run. This morning some guy bid on TI3 pushing me up to the steep price of 28NZDv<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRUSGSBR-HQwK2F8nOF2szAV9cS-ztYGSK81_8WqFbk4cnSVettI6hEYd9msskCUK_ZNG8ehponwoz-47fLR_H0PWFApJ_ufb95Lx_REiV9aQLrAVQ7t-VAQJb1AZYuQgOQ1qmoXo74O8/s1600/14951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRUSGSBR-HQwK2F8nOF2szAV9cS-ztYGSK81_8WqFbk4cnSVettI6hEYd9msskCUK_ZNG8ehponwoz-47fLR_H0PWFApJ_ufb95Lx_REiV9aQLrAVQ7t-VAQJb1AZYuQgOQ1qmoXo74O8/s1600/14951.jpg" height="197" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So what is TI3 you may ask? Well it is a game in the same vein as <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/Eclipse">Eclipse</a> where you are in control of a galactic civilisation. The general aim is to get 10 victory points by resource management, controlling planets, blowing each other up and politics. Yes politics, apparently this game has a pretty decent political dimension to it which makes it a stand out game. As I haven't played it I can only go on what I have read of the game.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj12WNPE8KsrHYX7fWOcIUI7x-gBLxTZ1HqD5DSgDhLZJtmgMHA5hZ7cbIieJmOtFkd7Zq9kme7TDT4evI6KExPEVz_8cL13k2MMOPFvfV4SSR_gRdGTeRXicZ7K4MZ06tT5JaOr5ECbZo/s1600/2009_12_18__twilight_imperium_review.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj12WNPE8KsrHYX7fWOcIUI7x-gBLxTZ1HqD5DSgDhLZJtmgMHA5hZ7cbIieJmOtFkd7Zq9kme7TDT4evI6KExPEVz_8cL13k2MMOPFvfV4SSR_gRdGTeRXicZ7K4MZ06tT5JaOr5ECbZo/s1600/2009_12_18__twilight_imperium_review.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A game in progress</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Another thing which makes this game stand out is a whopping 8+ hours/whole day play time. That is in a nut shell why I didn't want to spend $150 as it is to much for a game which only gets to see the sunlight 1-2 times a year.<br />
<br />
All in all I am pretty chuffed as $28 feels like I am pretty much stealing it. I must admit I feel pretty bad for the guy who probably spend a lot to get it new, it sat on his/her shelf for many years unused and he only gets 1/5 of the retail price. Alas I guess thats what happens if you make the reserve in an auction so low. </div>

Getting ready for another Flames of War game this week Dan and I stepped into the games room and this is what we found...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1DQnkixmyTwXT0iebcxyurIeIjNOWc6O-ScpEETmNTrwaAyOkmEVip_ub5VgcyCUp-SmLU3y7UFhZQuxGH3y4viQ1yzalZJ_xg__NLfBNXqxs7tOlKM9by04VVZToqZWZcUEzm-FeLtM/s1600/20140113_194634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1DQnkixmyTwXT0iebcxyurIeIjNOWc6O-ScpEETmNTrwaAyOkmEVip_ub5VgcyCUp-SmLU3y7UFhZQuxGH3y4viQ1yzalZJ_xg__NLfBNXqxs7tOlKM9by04VVZToqZWZcUEzm-FeLtM/s400/20140113_194634.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The thoughts of finishing <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/2014/01/motivation-test-fow-battle-report.html">last weeks game</a> were crushed as Dans daughter had attempted her own game. It puts a whole new meaning on the phrase 'panzer parking lot'. So we decided the only possible solution was a pint at the pub and plan out 2014.<br />
<br />
We discussed three key different gaming activities to be on the cards. Number one of course gaming and more specifically Flames of War. We decided to stress the fact that this was not just gaming, but training as Dan and I want to give competitive FOW a shot.<br />
<br />
Board-gaming is number two. There are lots of games out there we want to give a shot. I am hoping to get a copy of Twilight Imperium an epic space game at some point. There are also a few new games on the shelf like Galaxy Trucker and Firefly the group is keen to take for a spin.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jAgwjkPqi4uSrttwD1st3CjbuhPQuzXa0XKEJq9b3Kf_KT3RiDWu2pkucnQveUS5D_iZzwLOY9ojGkXQOmwQZVH28W5nw4VAIl3ifKhiuUh6ao4rO3ogUR8fR6EEMTOdHmrW2YtxrEM/s1600/20131224_213923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jAgwjkPqi4uSrttwD1st3CjbuhPQuzXa0XKEJq9b3Kf_KT3RiDWu2pkucnQveUS5D_iZzwLOY9ojGkXQOmwQZVH28W5nw4VAIl3ifKhiuUh6ao4rO3ogUR8fR6EEMTOdHmrW2YtxrEM/s400/20131224_213923.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A stegosaurs has taken over the galaxy in Firefly</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Lastly we want to give RPGs another shot but break away from D&D and it's shoddy combat mechanic (see details of our last adventures <a href="http://50mmgameroom.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/Dungeons%20and%20Dragons">here</a>). We have had ideas over the last while of Call of Cthulhu which has more of an emphasis on role-playing and investigation rather that combat. Cut out the bad and in with the new I say.<br />
<br />
Happy Gaming for 2014!<br />
<br />
<i>Just a small side note. After last weeks Flames of War game I have had inspiration and have got back into painting. I just have been bogged down by my large american armoured rifle platoon so it is taking a while to finish. Photos of at least the infantry by the end of the week... hopefully. </i></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the christmas break I traveled up to Matamata or as my ex boss liked to call it Matamatamata (don't know why but calling it Matamatamata got stuck in my head). While Peter Jackson was traversing around NZ in a helicopter he spotted a lovely spot in the country side of the metropolis which is Matamata (population 6000). After many visits to Matamata we decided as the whole family was together (which is no small feat due to them living all over the world) to fork out 75NZD each to see Hobbiton. I can't say I know for sure but I believe Hobbiton is just a name they came up with instead of The Shire. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hobbiton is what remains of the movie set from Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies. After the first films most of the set was destroyed however when they reconstructed it for the Hobbit they made it permanent for tourism purposes. Which is quite nice as it was a very cool tour seeing all the different hobbit holes all different shapes and sizes. Yes they are different sizes as we learnt that they used forced perspective in the film to make people look either bigger or smaller such as Gandalf and Frodo. Anyhow enough talking and some photos of some pretty neat modelling! </div>

All in all it was a fun trip although a little on the expensive side of things. I would recommend it if you are in the area and have a bit of cash to burn. Supposedly one of the tour guides is around 75 and does it for the love of the LOTR mythos. </div>

<span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-NZ;">The last
month has been on the busy side, family celebrations, moving houses and still
working all but the statutory days. Is that an excuse for not doing much painting?
Not really. Part of this was because when I did get drive to do some painting I
couldn’t find my black spray-paint to undercoat some of my FOW troops. When I
did find it I lost inspiration. I needed something to motivate me so Dan and I
arranged to play a game of FOW last night. Unfortunately due to time
constraints we didn’t get to play a full game but it was nice to get back into
the swing of it again. And yes it worked, I have itchy fingers and am keen to
get back to painting my Hell on Wheels’ army. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-NZ;">We set up

rocky cliff faces, plenty of trees and a railroad track, they had railroads in
LOTRs right? Not large amounts of terrain to hide as the defender yet not so
great for advancing troops either. Dan hid one of the objectives behind the
train station and I placed my objective out in the open. I set my troops up in
two separate groups, one coming down from the side cliffs and another from the
middle, Dan dispersed his infantry across the centre woodlands. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

probably wasn’t in his advantage either and setting his PaKs away from the

a great game. As Dan describes it a true war game! The rules are admittedly
rather complex but they do make for a highly strategic and thematic game.
Achieving both is truly noteworthy of a great game. Now to get on with some

It has been a small while since I last wrote a post and I had planned to upload a post about a FOW game Dan and I had yesterday however somethings must come first, and the FOW post tomorrow.... It should come as no surprise really that Stephen Fry who plays the Master in The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug gets his own miniature. Admittedly an overpriced miniature being a games workshop product (note I am not responsible for my own words... Oh god please don't sue us GW for writing that).<br />

<br />
A pretty neat figure really. Being a fan of Stephen Fry as a comedian and actor I thought this was noteworthy of a post. Oh and its our 101 post so doubly noteworthy.<br />
<br />
To celebrate I will now share something else for your interest. My wife and I over the last few days have discovered an new TV show, its also French so if you don't like subtitles or the French don't read on. It is called The Returned and is about a small town where people who have died a number of years ago return from the dead seemingly just like they were before they died, There is also plenty of strange going ons in this town. It seems to fall into a drama / mystery / horror category and is reminiscent of shows such as the fabulous Twin Peaks. The Guardian rated it as the top show of 2013 and I think it is a 9/10. Don't take our word for it though, give it a shot!<br />

<br />
Back to the regular programme tomorrow, perhaps. </div>

</div>
I have now finished Gandalf, the last unpainted model from the Escape from Goblin Town set, which I had resolved to get done before the end of the year. I used the Tale of Painters tutorial, but changed the order of things to suit me more. See the link <a href="http://taleofpainters.blogspot.co.nz/2012/12/tutorial-how-to-paint-gandalf-from.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I have added in picture of the Goblin Town set, showing the dwarves in particular as well.<br />

Break now until the New Year when I have a fair bit of accumulated Flames of War to paint.<br />

There was a rather large spider impaled on Aragorn's sword! Three possibilities presented themselves:<br />
<br />
1) Said spider jumped from great height and impaled itself on sword (thereby accidentally killing itself)<br />
2) Spider died and fell onto sword<br />
3) My models come alive at night and get up to mischief.<br />
<br />
You see the photos and decide:<br />
